A new cooling and heating system was installed in connection with renovation and expansion of the hotel, contributing to the hotel obtaining energy efficiency class A, with a green heating label in accordance with the energy label regulation. The installation was completed at the end of 2020, while the hotel reopened and returned to normal operation in April 2021. Additional focus on 3 areas: 1. Greatest possible energy savings 2. Lowest possible investment costs 3. Short repayment time (ROI)

Challenge

The customer required that the hotel obtains energy class A in accordance with energy regulations in Norway after installation, and the investment should be profitable compared to installation and utilization of remote heating. Another requirement was that the system must supply a SCOP of minimum 4.0, and the noise from outdoor units must be reduced to below 35db(A).

Solutions & Tech Applied

The installation is an air to water heat pump localized in an arctic environment and naturally in a cold climate zone. The system solution is a 3-pipe VRF system, and the installation is proof that air to water solutions also work perfectly in a colder Norwegian winter climate. The system solution is connected to a central control system, and melting of snow outdoors is automatically controlled using data from the Norwegian weather forecaster Yr.no. The system solution is very innovative since it SIMULTANEOUSLY provides heating, cooling and domestic hot water. Polar Energi does not know of any comparable system solution anywhere in the world. With the patented PSHI™ technology developed by the company, together with highly efficient ECOi Panasonic outdoor units, the hotel is pleased about a SCOP of no less than 4.8.

After the expansion, the total building area is approximately 10,000m2, with 200 guest rooms and a conference centre for up to 780 participants. The energy efficiency is extremely good, with a SCOP of no less than 4.8. As an example, the total energy consumption related to the installation was only 10,000kWh for September 2021. The investment will be completely paid off in only 3.5 years

Key Tech Features

Produces domestic hot water (<80°C), without additional energy sources besides the heat pump itself.

DHW, which is fed to peak load heaters, is sufficient to cover the total hot water requirement.

Capacity
