Sotec, EVG INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE LTD

The aim was to construct the largest sports facility in Gibraltar and to demonstrate that it could be sustainable with near-zero consumption. To this end, the project combined renewable energies with highly efficient systems managed by a BMS with strict energy control. In addition, the units installed outdoors had to have specific treatments to prevent corrosion due to the saline environment, as they are located just 20 metres from the sea.

Challenge

A displacement air-conditioning system was to be installed so that the air would not affect the flight of the shuttlecocks in badminton and to cover the DHW demand with near-zero consumption. It was also necessary to avoid changes in the building cycle due to the different activities inside the building and to provide the best possible ventilation by using the outside air temperatures as an energy source to cool the building.

Solutions & Tech Applied

Panasonic has managed to implement the perfect solution for the different systems under a BMS that manages the climate, DHW, ventilation, photovoltaic collection and the other systems for lighting, irrigation, etc. to make the building almost zero consumption. Also, in recognition of the results achieved, the government has declared the building a mandatory reference building for all government projects and works in Gibraltar in the tertiary sector.

The displacement air-conditioning was achieved by using DX indoor units with ducting and backflow on the floor with air flow speed <1 m/s on the track. The air conditioning of the different rooms for other sports (gyms, squash, darts, bowling...) has been achieved by air handling units and AHUS DX COIL connected to ECOi with recovery and hydrokits to preheat the DHW up to 45 °C totally free of charge on an annual basis. A photovoltaic solar gain system (more than 400 panels) has also been installed to supply energy to the building and feed it into the grid when not in use.

Key Tech Features

Air conditioning with energy recovery for DHW, photovoltaic collection and almost zero consumption.

The sports centre also hosts non-sporting events, such as concerts.
