Arctic TreeHouse Hotel and local installation company

The Arctic TreeHouse Hotel in Rovaniemi, Finland, is a design-forward retreat located on the Arctic Circle, hosting approximately 30,000 guests annually. Given its northern location, a reliable heating system is essential to ensure year-round comfort. Panasonic upgraded the heating system in one of the exclusive Arctic GlassHouses, marking the first installation of the Power Heat Multi in Europe. This air-to-air multi-system, developed for Nordic conditions, ensures warmth even in extreme cold.

Challenge

Panasonic partnered with Arctic TreeHouse Hotel to equip a cabin with the new Power Heat. Upgrade from existing floor heating and a fireplace to an energy-efficient multi-split system, meanwhile facing harsh winter conditions. It was required to deliver reliable, maintenance-free heating, improved air quality, and customizable climate control while blending seamlessly with the hotel’s design.

Solutions & Tech Applied

As the 2-room outdoor unit CU-2Z50ABEC has a heating capacity of 4.4kW at -25°C, it ensures warmth during the coldest days, making it an ideal solution for this hotel located on the Arctic Circle. Thanks to the built-in base pan heater, ice formation is prevented on the outdoor unit.
Through our sensors, the system's performance has been monitored, revealing a consistent operation pattern, with the system entering defrost mode for 13 to 15 minutes every five hours of operation, ensuring stable performance regardless of weather conditions.

This location is an optimal test site for Panasonic’s new Power Heat Multi due to its extreme and challenging Arctic conditions, making it the perfect environment to test the system’s performance.

 Year-round performance and low maintenance
Despite experiencing significant temperature fluctuations in the Rovaniemi area during the test period, ranging from around -30°C on the coldest days to +29°C on the warmest day, the heat pump has consistently proven dependable.
Additionally, during warmer summer months, the system can easily be switched into cooling mode, making it a versatile solution for year-round comfort.

“Even though the temperature changes have been vast, the system has been really reliable.” Kenneth, CEO Arctic Tree House Hotel & Santa Park Limited

The Power Heat Multi system demonstrated a performance calculating an 80% reduction in energy consumption compared to the previous electric heating system. A key benefit of the Panasonic system is its low maintenance requirements, with only one outdoor unit to service. The system's reliability was a crucial factor for the hotel management, especially given the challenges of operating in such extreme conditions. For improved control of the heat pump – Panasonic Comfort Cloud app can be used to adapt and monitor the temperature, energy consumption and error notifications regardless of time or place. The indoor units have built-in Wi-Fi connectivity.

“The low maintenance having only one outer unit to be maintained but two indoor units, providing the possibility of creating two different climate zones in the facility, is really important.” Kenneth, CEO Arctic Tree House Hotel & Santa Park Limited

 Seamless integration with the hotel
The hotel also values design as a critical element, and Panasonic's solutions align perfectly with this, as the Power Heat outdoor unit is designed in anthracite grey color and the HZ Flagship indoor units are chosen colors to match the hotel's aesthetic. This combination of functionality, energy efficiency, and design flexibility has made Panasonic’s Power Heat Multi a great fit for this project.

“Everything has been running as expected, which is of course a must in a place like this.” Kenneth, CEO Arctic Tree House Hotel & Santa Park Limited

 Conclusion
Cold winter days are common in Rovaniemi, and these weather conditions really put this heat pump to the test. The product testing conducted in a third-party laboratory at temperatures as low as -35°C confirms the system's suitability for cold climates. Panasonic is confident that the Power Heat Multi is an ideal solution for this northern location. Overall, the successful implementation of Panasonic’s Power Heat Multi system in such an environment not only proves its durability and efficiency but also allows the hotel to feel safe with this heating system all year round.
