The objective was to modernise the refrigeration and freezing facilities in the production kitchens to improve energy efficiency and reduce the CO2 footprint. To achieve this, the existing high-GWP HFC equipment had to be replaced by a natural refrigerant with GWP 1, CO2 in this case, with inverter technology; the client's demand had to be met with quiet, low-consumption and environmentally friendly equipment;

Challenge

To defend investment in CO2 technology, which, despite having a higher price, provides greater efficiency and a lower life-cycle cost than other technologies; to provide a solution to the large distance between units; to train the technical team in the installation, service and maintenance of CO2 units; to adapt to Ibiza's outdoor temperatures and to implement a remote monitoring system.

Solutions & Tech Applied

At first, the client was reluctant to use CO2 systems due to their experience with installations with this same natural refrigerant from other manufacturers or in other hotels, but due to the updating of the regulations (F-GAS) and the change of paradigm and philosophy of the hotel chain to position itself as a sustainable and green brand, it was decided to opt for the installation of this equipment. Having overcome the initial difficulties caused by the increasingly frequent high summer temperatures and the initial problems (beyond Panasonic's control) with the connectivity system for remote monitoring, there is no doubt that this technology now meets the client's expectations in terms of operation, investment and energy costs. According to the company's management, they are interested in implementing the technology in the rest of the chain's hotels as existing equipment is replaced.

The innovation lies in the use of Panasonic OCU condensing units for CO2, equipped with a dual-stage refrigeration system and a single compressor for the two compression stages (high and low). The hotel company GPS-VIBRA HOTELES is a pioneer in Spain in the use of CO2 as a refrigerant in centralised systems for production kitchens, and these two hotels in its chain are the first in Spain to adopt this technology. The collaboration of Panasonic's pre-sales and after-sales technical department is worth mentioning, as they provided the necessary support at all times for the commissioning and operation of the equipment.
