The customer had challenging requirements for cooling and heating their building. Firstly, the technology employed would have to offer superb efficiency and intelligence. Secondly, it had to facilitate simple and cost-effective maintenance. In addition, the comfort factor remained top priority whilst minimal changes could be made to the building's construction.

Challenge

Finally, stringent requirements were given for the design of the building, such that the outdoor units for the climate control system had to be housed out of sight under the roof. To guarantee sufficient ventilation (no heat build-up), one whole side of the central roof area was enclosed in perforated cladding of the same colour as the facade. This ensured that the cladding blended seamlessly into the facade.

Solutions & Tech Applied

The installers, RGS GmbH from Ingolstadt, had installed numerous Panasonic ECOi 2- and 3-pipe systems in prior years with a cumulative cooling capacity of over 8.2 MW. Proceeding from a wealth of experience in all phases from planning to installation and maintenance, the entire project could be implemented in just 20 months. To offer employees the best possible comfort, 3-pipe direct evaporation indoor units were chosen. Automatic shade control and window incidence deliver intelligent efficiency: Depending on where the sun is, the shades automatically retract or deploy to protect employees from intense solar radiation. Fresh air supply to the interior offices, storage area and workshop on the ground floor was realized through the combination of a ventilation system with a PACi air conditioning system. RGS planned and implemented the monitoring and control of the ventilation systems.

Every employee can now customize his or her comfort zone. When all employees leave the building and the security systems are activated, the building control is automatically placed in Standby Mode, thus automatically setting all climate control variables to their pre-programmed values. The intelligent, user-friendly controller was developed and programmed in-house by an employee of RGS GmbH. A high-level controller from Saia Burgess Controls was used for this purpose. The air flow from the outdoor units is dissipated out of sight through three large openings in the roof and a row of weather-resistant grates on a protrusion on the building roof.
