Structural renovation of a concrete building across 5 floors and a surface of 12,000 m². These areas had to be cooled, heated, humidified and dehumidified. The building underwent remodeling to become the archive for the German state library of Baden-Württemberg. This means that it houses documents that are well over a hundred years old. Constant temperature and humidity, central control, remote monitoring, and shut-off of the entire system in case of fire were essential prerequisites.

Challenge

The goal was to optimally and innovatively plan the four modes of cooling, heating, humidification AND dehumidification so that every point in the whole space is at specified values! The specified conditions are 24 ±1 °C and a humidity of 50 ±5%. Separate cost accounting for each of the floors so that each can be billed separately. Installation sites of the outdoor units in relation to the connection distances of the various system types.

Solutions & Tech Applied

This project provided multiple opportunities for innovative solutions using the Panasonic product range: 1. In comparison to central oil heating, we were able to achieve superior reliability by dividing the planning across 12 refrigerant loops using VRF technology. 2. The oil heating system was already in place, so only a cooling system was needed. However, this also gave us the opportunity to implement a winter heating mode with the ECOi EX without any additional costs. "Everything under one roof" – All plant equipment from one supplier = first point of contact! And installation by one company = first point of contact!

Because the Panasonic ECOi EX also gives us the ability to heat, the previously planned investment in a new heating system could be discarded. This not only allowed us to save on the up-front investment, it also spared us the installation of a second system, thus improving amortization by years. The energy previously consumed in heating the building was 14,000 litres of heating oil per month. We were able to cut these energy costs in half by deploying the Panasonic VRF ECOi EX. That works out at about 4000 Euros in savings every month. The new ECOi EX system and VRF Designer gave Panasonic a major competitive edge over the other two bidders. The resulting SCOP values of up to 8 and SEER values of up to 13, accounting for the various connection distances, were another factor. Detailed installation planning with VRF Designer provided an additional incentive in winning over the building owner and system operator.

The key technical function is the cost-effective and highly efficient ECOi EX system for heating and cooling. Additionally, 41 duct devices, each of 28 kW, together with Kienzler fabric ducts connected to 31 ECOi EX outdoor units, were selected for draft-free air conditioning and uniform air distribution. The duct devices with fabric ducts were also selected to ensure perfect air flow and distribution throughout the space, since we need to maintain a room temperature of 24 ±1 °C. Due to architectural limitations, eight 4-way cassettes were used in two areas. One ventilation unit with waste heat recovery and direct evaporation was deployed in each of the areas for Dry Storage, Paper and Digitization; these units are also integrated into the VRF system. All systems are controlled from the CZ-256ESMC3 Touch Controller for monitoring and overhead cost reporting. In case of a fire alarm, a digital input immediately shuts off all interior units.
