Using a series of 16 ECOi-W AQUA-G BLUE H 50 reversible heat pumps in cascade, Panasonic ensures a pleasant climate in the climate-neutral ‘Dockyard Waterfront Offices’ office building on the banks of the Spree in Berlin.

Challenge

The 'Dockyard Waterfront Offices' project, located on the banks of the Spree between Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain in Berlin, blends sustainable architecture with state-of-the-art building technology. As a resource-efficient timber hybrid structure, it required a climate-friendly heating and cooling solution that met stringent standards for energy efficiency, climate neutrality, and building height. The key challenge was integrating a high-performance system within a limited space.

Solutions & Tech Applied

A new office building is being constructed on the banks of the Spree in Berlin between Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain. Designed as a climate- and resource-friendly timber-hybrid structure, it seamlessly combines sustainable materials such as wood, steel, and concrete. The façade features large glass surfaces for optimal lighting and transparency in the building. The numerous terraces, loggias and balconies extend the rooms towards the Spree. This is complemented by an energy concept that enables the building to operate in a climate-neutral manner, including through the use of renewable energy sources. In collaboration with the client and technical building outfitter, Licht Loidl GmbH, Panasonic provided an environmentally friendly solution that was a perfect fit for the project. A cascade of 16 ECOi-W AQUA-G BLUE H 50 reversible heat pumps ensures efficient heating and delivers pleasant cooling on warm days.

A key advantage of this system is its use of the natural refrigerant R290, which boasts an ultra-low global warming potential (GWP = 0.02), aligning with the project's sustainability goals. Additionally, to comply with strict height restrictions, the compact design of the ECOi-W AQUA-G BLUE H 50  - at just 1.90 metres - allowed all 16 units to be installed on the roof without exceeding the building’s maximum height. The product range also stands for quiet operation, high seasonal energy efficiency, a water flow temperature of up to 70°C and a total system capacity of up to 640 kW. Its wide operating range makes the appliances even easier to use: in heating mode, the ECOi-W AQUA-G BLUE H 50 is the ideal solution for heating water and domestic hot water preparation. At an outside temperature of 0° C, hot water flow temperatures of up to 70° C are possible. In cooling mode, water flow temperatures down to -15° C even guarantee optimum operating temperatures for industrial process cooling.
