Welcome to our latest interview where you will be diving into the HVAC industry through different women perspectives and careers.

Fun Fact:  I am the longest serving employee from AMP and now PHVACUK.

How do you started in the HVACR industry?

I started in the HVACR Industry straight from School at the age of 17, I came about this position purely by accident and have stayed in the same in the Indsutry ever since.  I progressed very quickly from a reception position to Field Sales and managing a Team as I still do now, 42 years later.

What are some common misconceptions about working in the HVACR industry?

You do not have to be an Engineer to work in this Industry, in Sales we must know what we are selling and know that we have support behind the scenes to assist when it is required.   The most important aspect is building up our network of customers, this is still a people Industry and our success is also based on who we know!! The Industry is still small compared to others, I am still dealing with customers I have known for over 30 years, they are loyal and will always come to me for guiddance and advice on Projects.

Another side to answer this question is the male domination in our Industry has been taking a turn for many years now.  When I started my career I could count the number of prominant women in the Industry on two hands.  This has completely changed, we have women in Management, engineering, Key Account Management and Spec to name but a few,  it is very refreshing and I am sure this will continue to increase.

What do you enjoy most about working in Panasonic?

The switch over from Amp to Panasonic has been a long journey, going from a small almost family type business has meant many changes.  I really enjoy being part of the Panasonic Family, I am proud of my longevity with the Company and thrive in Managing my Team and my Customer base.  I know the Industry very well and have a large network.  Panasonic are continually offering training and guidance on the product ranges and people skills to enhance our knowledge on managing people.

Panasonic look after their employees, this is not always easy to find...

What qualities do you think are essential for success in HVACR?

Knowledge – always keep abreast with legislations and regulations, be open to learning all aspects of the industry  and taking on new challenges.  This keeps your position fresh and up to date.

Motivation – In Sales, knockbacks can come quickly when the Market is on a down turn, keep positive and uncover every stone, there is also another channel to explore that could give rewards and results.

What advice would you give to young women considering a career in HVACR?

The diversity within the Industry for Women now is huge, there are so many avenues to take.  Just be confident, talk to as many people as possoble for advice on which way to go.  I am a member of the IOR and there is always a wealth of knowledge and guidance on their website and portal.  Getting to know the Industry is key, this can be learnt from reading and being interested.

How can we support and encourage more women to join the HVACR industry?

There are many groups now linked to the IOR for Women In the Industry, it is a case of keeping these success stories prominant on social media and ensuring that larger Companies in the Industry are active and encouraging, highlighting women that work in their organisations and  work places.

There many exciting opportunities for Women in the Industry now which is so refreshing and exciting.
